Learning for Tomorrow – School Construction

IoT

With the new Arduino-Yuns, a new family of microcontrollers has been introduced to the market. The Arduino controllers which are very popular worldwide have been expanded with new libraries and devices that give the Arduino family its network capability. The manufacturers promise a wealth of possibilities for IoT applications based on Arduino.

The subject of this thesis is the creation of a concept for WebApp development for IoT process visualization and control based on Arduino-Yuns.

The concept is based on the Arduino Yun and is used to develop use cases and web techniques that allow remote or wireless access to the Arduino-Yun. Using a web application, the Arduino-Yun can be used to control actuators connected to the Arduino Yun and to read data from sensors that are also connected to the Arduino Yun.

Water is Energy 2023 (WIE23)

Decentralization and Redistribution of Potable Water in Cameroon

Topic: Current Situation, Constraints, Challenges, and Opportunities to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

The WIE23 project highlights the issues surrounding decentralized management of potable water in Cameroon. Through an in-depth analysis, we address the current challenges related to water distribution in local communities, the technical and financial obstacles, and the solutions required to ensure equitable access to potable water for all.

This project aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), aiming to ensure the sustainable management of water resources and improve potable water infrastructure in both rural and urban areas of Cameroon.

Key Issues:

  • Unequal access to potable water in rural areas
  • Outdated and insufficient water distribution infrastructure
  • Financing decentralized water distribution projects
  • Strengthening local capacity for water management

Challenges:

  • Increase stakeholder participation at the local level
  • Accelerate the implementation of redistribution projects
  • Promote innovative and sustainable solutions for water management
  • Address growing potable water demands in the face of climate change

Together, we are committed to providing a sustainable solution for potable water in Cameroon.

Water is Energy 2022 (WIE22)

Share a Smile Initiative

The *Water is Energy 2022 (WIE22)* project is part of our ongoing commitment to addressing pollution and ensuring access to clean water in Cameroon. This year’s theme, “Share a Smile,” focuses on raising awareness about environmental issues such as air pollution, soil pollution, and water contamination. By educating communities on the impact of pollution and promoting sustainable living, we aim to protect our planet and improve the health and wellbeing of its inhabitants.

WIE22 Infographic

Throughout the project, we addressed the major pollutants affecting air, soil, and water. Our team conducted various educational campaigns, field projects, and hands-on activities, encouraging the local population to adopt more sustainable practices. Key focus areas included pollution reduction, the use of renewable energy, and the importance of recycling.

Field Work in Cameroon

A critical part of WIE22 was the direct engagement with communities. Our team collaborated with local leaders and environmental activists to install water wells and filtration systems in rural areas, providing access to clean and safe water. The impact of this work was immediate, with hundreds of villagers now benefiting from improved water quality.

This project is a step toward achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 6: Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.

Summary of the project

“SHARE A SMILE” is a water solidarity project implemented by the Association pour l’Egalité et le Bien-Etre (ASEBE) in the locality of Ongot, a village in the commune of Mbankomo, located in the Central Cameroon Region, Mefou and Akono Department.

In order to guarantee access to water and sanitation for all and to ensure sustainable management of water resources, which is the 6th Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of the United NationThe project aimed to “raise awareness on good hygiene and sanitation practices”.

The “SHARE A SMILE” project was therefore based on three main activities: a training seminar, a vast awareness campaign on good hygiene and sanitation practices in the locality of Ongot and a digital awareness campaign on good hygiene and sanitation practices.

THE TRAINING SEMINAR
For the first phase of the “SHARE A SMILE” project, the Association pour l’Egalité et le Bien-Etre (ASEBE) organised a four-day training seminar from 9 to 12 March 2021 on specific themes such as the management of humanitarian projects (days 1 and 2), the principles and fundamentals of community health (day 3) and the treatment and management of waste and contaminated water (day 4). This very important seminar allowed the members of the Association for Equality and Well-being (ASEBE) and the participants to come out with the quintessence of these themes in order to be able to carry out the vast awareness campaign for the populations of ONGOT and on all digital platforms. This was without counting on the experience and skills of the three (03) session facilitators (experts) who ultimately met the expectations of the participants by providing them with the necessary bases.

THE VAST AWARENESS CAMPAIGN ON GOOD HYGIENE AND SANITATION PRACTICES IN THE LOCALITY OF ONGOT
As part of the implementation of “SHARE A SMILE“, a vast awareness campaign was organised by the Association for Equality and Well-being (ASEBE). It was held in the locality of ONGOT with the aim of sensitising the pupils of the Modern High School of ONGOT as well as the populations of this locality on good practices in hygiene and salubrity. It lasted for 2 days (23 and 24 March 2021). Day 1 was devoted to sensitising the pupils of the Lycée Moderne d’ONGOT on good hygiene and sanitation practices. Thus, going from class to class (6ème to Terminale), the Principal of the school and his staff allowed the project team (composed of 12 people including the President of the Association for Equality and Well-being (ASEBE), its members and the technical team) to be deployed within the school campus. The objective of the deployment was to sensitise the students of the Lycée on good hygiene and sanitation practices and the importance of personally and permanently ensuring that these practices are respected both at school and at home.

THE DIGITAL AWARENESS CAMPAIGN ON GOOD HYGIENE AND SANITATION PRACTICES
The digital awareness campaign is the key to the success of the SHARE A SMILE project.  It consisted of promoting the message conveyed by the project team on all digital platforms concerning good hygiene and sanitation practices. Because it is important to reach as many people as possible, digital technology is a universal tool that allows a message to be passed on easily and safely across borders. The project team understood this and implemented a strong digital communication through its official pages (ASEBE Facebook page, Twitter, WhatsApp group, LinkedIn account, Facebook group of International cooperation, ASEBE YouTube Channel, radio, internet and ASEBE web page) as well as those of its members and all participants adhering to the promotion of good hygiene and sanitation practices. The campaign reached nearly 35,000 people. This are the link of activities published in specialized journals on the internet.
